The Vineyards

Halcon Vineyard

One of California highest vineyards, the rocky mountain top location of Halcon provides a wide variety of exposures, perfect for producing Rhone wines. The temperate weather and unique soils here encourage roots to dig deep, helping to moderate vigor and allowing for optimal ripening, eventually resulting in complex mineral characteristics in the wines from this vineyard.

Location:Mendocino County
Appellation:Yorkville Highlands
Varietals:Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah
Soil Type:Gravelly, nutrient-poor soils on high benches around 2500 feet elevation; limited topsoil covers fractured shale and schist

Panek Vineyard

Though this vineyard is located on what many would consider the valley floor, its unique position on a subtle anticline just behind the historic Aida vineyard, creates ideal conditions for producing distinctive wines. The gently slope of this rocky knoll encourages optimal soil drainage, leading to low yields—averaging between two to three tons per acre. Also, the vineyard benefits from its location within a cooler microclimate. This low-lying area of the Napa Valley is more temperate than either the eastern or western hills of St Helena, providing conditions for slower ripening and complete integration of flavors. Panek vineyard beautifully expresses the characteristics of its location within the St Helena appellation.

Location:St. Helena, Napa County
Appellation:St. Helena
Varietals:Cabernet Sauvignon
Soil Type:Highly compacted, rocky alluvial deposits; located along the former course of the Napa River.

Tierra Roja Vineyard

Located on the slopes of the eastern hills of Oakville, this exemplary vineyard is just what comes to mind when people consider the best of Oakville. Tierra Roja—meaning red earth—is planted on pure red, rocky, crushed red earth in a remarkable location in the valley, just across the street from Screaming Eagle, down hill from Dalla Valle and next door to the Backus vineyard. Boulders the size of small cars still litter the upper slopes in the terraced section of the vineyard. The 20+ year-old Cabernet vines struggle to produce much crop at all in the best of years, but the crop that is produced features berries no larger than buckshot. These small-berried, loose clusters result in a dark, rich, incredibly intense wine with amazing structure and ageing potential. After several years of searching for a hillside Oakville vineyard to add to the Rudius portfolio, I could not be more excited to add the Tierra Roja Vineyard.
Location:Oakville, Napa County
Appellation:Oakville
Varietals:Cabernet Sauvignon
Soil Type:Iron-rich volcanic soil layered over highly fractured, well-drained rocky deposits

Boeschen Vineyard

Set into a picturesque side valley at the base of Glass Mountain, this seven acre estate produces high quality fruit without sacrificing sustainability. All of Boeschen’s viticulture practices reflect a commitment to conservation and environmental sensitivity. Employing a no-till approach to vineyard care, and using beneficial insects and predatory birds for pest control helps reduce impact on the local ecosystem. Minimal water use and responsible stewardship of the Napa River watershed, including neighboring Howell Creek, has also helped Boeschen Vineyards achieve a Fish Friendly Farming certification. But these practices also have a considerable impact on fruit quality. The pure, organic farming methods allow the fruit to full concentrate flavors and develop tannin structure with minimal human influence allow the fruit to fully express the gifts of this site’s unique terroir.

Location:St. Helena, Napa County
Appellation:St. Helena
Varietals:Cabernet Sauvignon
Soil Type:This double terraced, hillside block is located on a well drained, south-facing slope in the eastern hills. The obsidian-dominated, volcanic soils are left undisturbed thanks to no-till farming practices.
